Steffen and colleagues update planetary boundaries as a framework for identifying Earth-system processes whose destabilisation could endanger the conditions supporting contemporary societies. The iconic idea is a safe operating space defined not by predicted catastrophe at a single threshold but by zones of increasing risk around critical processes. The theoretical contribution lies in shifting sustainability from isolated environmental problems toward systemic regulation of climate, biosphere integrity, biogeochemical flows, land, freshwater and novel entities.
