The Architecture of Scale and the Mediated Body

Bodies are continuously reorganized by changes in scale, representation and institutional observation, and ScalarArchitecture is the operator that distinguishes the levels at which the same operation produces entirely different effects — a gesture legible at the scale of a room becomes illegible, or dangerous, at the scale of a population. Much of this reorganization happens silently. InvisibleGrammar names the systems of measurement, image and classification that direct perception without announcing themselves as directives. When bodies and identities pass repeatedly through these material and symbolic apparatuses, something deeper than representation occurs: ProteolyticTransmutation, the actual transformation produced by passage, not merely its record.
