DOLCE offers a foundational ontology grounded in linguistic, cognitive and philosophical analysis rather than a claim to describe reality from nowhere. Its iconic contribution is a stable set of general categories and relations capable of mediating among domain ontologies while remaining sensitive to ordinary human conceptualisation. The theoretical contribution lies in its descriptive metaphysics: categories reflect mesoscopic experience, language and social practice, and may evolve with knowledge or consensus. Methodologically, DOLCE combines formal axioms, OntoClean analysis and distinctions among particulars, qualities, events, roles and social objects. The conceptual operation is ontological mediation: heterogeneous domains become interoperable through explicit commitments rather than hidden equivalences. The wider bridge reaches philosophy, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and information systems. DOLCE demonstrates that formal precision becomes more useful when its underlying metaphysical choices are visible, contestable and adapted to the scale at which human beings ordinarily organise reality.
