Ciccarese and colleagues define provenance as a practical condition of trust in digital knowledge. Their iconic contribution is PAV, a lightweight ontology distinguishing authors, contributors, curators, representation creators, source resources and successive versions. The theoretical contribution lies in refusing the collapse of intellectual authorship, technical production and later modification into a single undifferentiated notion of creation. Methodologically, PAV develops a compact vocabulary from concrete scientific-workflow requirements, tests it across five projects and maps it to broader standards such as PROV-O and Dublin Core.
