To speak of thinking today as though it were a recent invention is to mistake new instruments for new forms of intelligence. Many of the ideas now associated with complexity, systems, networks, ecology, and distributed knowledge were already present in earlier attempts to understand how things hold together across time. A brief genealogy is enough to reveal a deeper continuity.


Heraclitus established one of the oldest principles of systemic thought: a thing does not persist despite transformation but through transformation itself. Change was not the enemy of identity but the condition through which identity remained possible. Ibn Khaldun extended this intuition into the social realm, reading civilisations as dynamic formations sustained by collective cohesion, where power emerged from internal forces of organisation and eventually weakened through their dissolution. Centuries later, Giambattista Vico proposed that human worlds could be understood because they were made by human beings themselves, introducing the radical idea that history is not simply inherited reality but a constructed field of meanings, institutions, and imaginaries. Alexander von Humboldt transformed the perception of nature by refusing to treat the world as an inventory of separate objects. Mountains, climates, organisms, and human perception belonged to a single web of relations whose patterns could only be understood through connection. Charles Sanders Peirce brought the same relational principle into the domain of meaning, showing that signs exist through interpretation and that understanding unfolds through an endless movement between expression, context, and consequence. Norbert Wiener later translated this intuition into the language of cybernetics, revealing feedback as a fundamental operation shared by organisms, machines, and societies. Susanne Langer expanded the field of cognition beyond linguistic thought, demonstrating that symbols, images, rituals, and artistic forms constitute complex modes of human understanding. Gregory Bateson finally radicalised the question by locating mind not exclusively inside individuals but within the patterns of relation connecting organisms, environments, and systems of communication. These thinkers never formed a single school, shared vocabulary, or common historical project. Yet they repeatedly approached the same fundamental intuition: coherence is produced through relations rather than possessed as an isolated property. A civilisation, an ecosystem, a symbol, or a mind exists through the continuity of patterns that reproduce themselves while adapting to new conditions. The present moment has not invented this way of thinking; it has inherited it and acquired instruments capable of making its complexity visible. Networks, computation, and new forms of representation have not replaced older intellectual traditions but have finally provided environments in which their deepest intuitions can operate at unprecedented scales. What appears as a contemporary revolution in thought is therefore also a return: the ancient recognition that everything enduring does so through the continuous organisation of its own transformations.
