Archives make growth visible and maintenance invisible. We count publications, identifiers, datasets, records and links because accumulation is easy to measure. Yet every addition creates obligations. Definitions become outdated, links disappear, repositories change interfaces, duplicate records proliferate and superseded formulations remain searchable long after they cease to represent current thinking. A knowledge system therefore grows twice: once through what it adds and again through the maintenance work produced by those additions. The second growth is less visible, although it determines whether the first remains useful. A persistent identifier can continue resolving perfectly while pointing to an obsolete record. A document can survive while the relationships that once made it intelligible have become unclear. A copied version can remain accessible while nobody knows whether it is canonical. Preservation and maintenance are therefore different achievements. Preservation keeps an object available; maintenance keeps its condition interpretable. This requires more than technical repair. Version histories have to show how definitions change. Broken links need correction. Metadata must be harmonized as schemas evolve. Duplicates should be identified without erasing legitimate archival copies. Relations require review. Some formulations eventually need to be marked as superseded or retired. Retirement is especially important because digital systems encourage a false equivalence between persistence and permanent validity. An outdated definition may remain historically valuable, but its status should be explicit. Maintenance also imposes an ethical limit on scale. A corpus can expand faster than its maintainers can review it. At that point accumulation produces opacity rather than knowledge: more records exist, but fewer can be confidently interpreted. This is maintenance debt, whether or not the term is formalized. The crucial point is that research architectures should be designed in relation to the labour required to sustain them. Infrastructure studies have long shown that systems become most visible when they fail. Knowledge infrastructures are no exception. Broken links, contradictory versions and abandoned records reveal the work that had previously remained hidden. A more mature scholarly culture would treat that labour as part of knowledge production itself. Maintenance is not the administrative residue that follows research. It is the continuous practice through which research remains usable, attributable and historically coherent.

Asay offers a stringent metaphysical challenge to conceptual engineering by separating concepts from the phenomena they enable us to think about. Philosophy, he argues, is ultimately concerned with knowledge, justice or causation themselves, not merely with the concepts that represent them. On this view, revising an entrenched concept is impossible in the strict sense: once its target changes, a new concept has been created. The apparent weakness becomes a productive clarification. Conceptual innovation remains philosophically powerful, but it should not be inflated into an overarching methodology or confused with the transformation of reality itself. This matters because technological disruption often changes the practices, entities and relations that concepts coordinate, making simple restoration either impossible or undesirable. The paper’s strongest contribution is anticipatory: conceptual engineering should not merely repair breakdown after it occurs but design concepts capable of absorbing foreseeable tensions. Its bridge to ecology and infrastructure is precise. A resilient concept resembles a living system or adaptable building: continuity is achieved not through immobility but through calibrated transformation, redundancy and responsiveness to changing conditions.

Socioplastics has evolved beyond a collection of neologisms into a versioned conceptual operating environment composed of approximately 120 stabilised operators, cross-references, persistent identifiers and editorial protocols. CamelTag formations such as AssumptionPresence and ErrorEmbodiment do not merely name phenomena; they perform distinctions whose meanings emerge through recurrent use. The system combines features of Wittgensteinian language-games, Lakatosian research programmes, Foucauldian dispositifs, Luhmannian operational closure and soft ontologies without becoming reducible to any of them. Its defining mechanism is editorial semipermeability: abstracts, keywords, citations, identifiers and versions facilitate circulation while preserving provenance. Entry remains accessible, transformation becomes necessary and exit must remain attributable. Versioning consequently functions as conceptual memory, revealing how definitions and relations change across time. The principal risks are semantic imperialism, template capture and biographical closure. These are countered through specific fallibility, requiring each operator to remain precise enough to fail recognisably while retaining the capacity to generate further inquiry. Socioplastics therefore constitutes an evolving infrastructure through which thought can be executed, revised and remembered.


To speak of thinking today as though it were a recent invention is to mistake new instruments for new forms of intelligence. Many of the ideas now associated with complexity, systems, networks, ecology, and distributed knowledge were already present in earlier attempts to understand how things hold together across time. A brief genealogy is enough to reveal a deeper continuity.


Heraclitus established one of the oldest principles of systemic thought: a thing does not persist despite transformation but through transformation itself. Change was not the enemy of identity but the condition through which identity remained possible. Ibn Khaldun extended this intuition into the social realm, reading civilisations as dynamic formations sustained by collective cohesion, where power emerged from internal forces of organisation and eventually weakened through their dissolution. Centuries later, Giambattista Vico proposed that human worlds could be understood because they were made by human beings themselves, introducing the radical idea that history is not simply inherited reality but a constructed field of meanings, institutions, and imaginaries. Alexander von Humboldt transformed the perception of nature by refusing to treat the world as an inventory of separate objects. Mountains, climates, organisms, and human perception belonged to a single web of relations whose patterns could only be understood through connection. Charles Sanders Peirce brought the same relational principle into the domain of meaning, showing that signs exist through interpretation and that understanding unfolds through an endless movement between expression, context, and consequence. Norbert Wiener later translated this intuition into the language of cybernetics, revealing feedback as a fundamental operation shared by organisms, machines, and societies. Susanne Langer expanded the field of cognition beyond linguistic thought, demonstrating that symbols, images, rituals, and artistic forms constitute complex modes of human understanding. Gregory Bateson finally radicalised the question by locating mind not exclusively inside individuals but within the patterns of relation connecting organisms, environments, and systems of communication. These thinkers never formed a single school, shared vocabulary, or common historical project. Yet they repeatedly approached the same fundamental intuition: coherence is produced through relations rather than possessed as an isolated property. A civilisation, an ecosystem, a symbol, or a mind exists through the continuity of patterns that reproduce themselves while adapting to new conditions. The present moment has not invented this way of thinking; it has inherited it and acquired instruments capable of making its complexity visible. Networks, computation, and new forms of representation have not replaced older intellectual traditions but have finally provided environments in which their deepest intuitions can operate at unprecedented scales. What appears as a contemporary revolution in thought is therefore also a return: the ancient recognition that everything enduring does so through the continuous organisation of its own transformations.

The Scaffold That Reads Back


Stability in a large knowledge corpus is not a final condition but a maintained relation between the fixity required for recognition and the plasticity necessary for revision. Its decisive achievement lies not in the accumulation of entries but in the construction of a scalar grammar through which the corpus can be read at several resolutions at once. The architecture of Socioplastics—nodes, packs, books, tomes, cores and markers—does more than contain propositions: it operates as an external cognitive scaffold that enables comparison, genealogical reconstruction and conceptual testing beyond the linear limits of conventional textual forms. Its epistemic force derives from an uneven distribution of permanence. Canonical definitions, persistent identifiers and bibliographic anchors establish durable coordinates from which semantic displacement can be measured, while more provisional elements remain open to correction, expansion and recombination. Stability therefore emerges as a stratified condition: sufficiently firm to preserve orientation, sufficiently porous to absorb transformation, and sufficiently historical to retain evidence of conceptual conflict, mutation and obsolescence. The significance of this architecture is epistemological rather than merely organisational, because its categories, sequences and relations condition what can become visible, which comparisons can be made and which questions can be formulated. A precise index does not simply retrieve existing knowledge; it constructs pathways across dispersed materials and reveals relations that would otherwise remain inaccessible. Yet every such revelation bears the imprint of prior editorial decisions concerning inclusion, naming, hierarchy and exclusion. Indexing is therefore an act of epistemic design. The external corpus of artists, architects, scientists, philosophers, activists and institutions acquires transdisciplinary coherence through the testing of conceptual portability: operators are displaced across fields, confronted with heterogeneous materials and judged according to whether they preserve explanatory force without erasing the specificity of their new conditions. Some concepts survive this passage and gain precision; others reveal their dependence upon the contexts from which they emerged. Repetition performs an equally discriminating function. Recurrence produces density when each appearance extends a mechanism, introduces new evidence or exposes a previously unseen limit, whereas frequency without conceptual variation merely expands the surface of the corpus. Distinguishing continuity from redundancy demands sustained editorial judgement, including the constructive work of subtraction: merging equivalent formulations, retiring weak distinctions, replacing obsolete references and transferring superseded variants from active vocabulary into documentary history. Such operations regulate proliferation while preserving the record of transformation. The intellectual architecture also depends upon a material infrastructure. Persistent identifiers, open formats, redundant repositories and explicit licences determine whether the field can remain accessible across technical transitions, while provenance, authorship, dates and version histories convert stored files into interpretable records. Without these contextual coordinates, preservation produces residue rather than knowledge. The same principle governs computational analysis. Digital tools may detect clusters, recurrences and unexpected proximities, but the significance of those patterns remains inseparable from the editorial decisions that defined the corpus, its units and its classificatory boundaries. The scaffold facilitates knowledge production without performing interpretation in place of its readers. Its ultimate value lies neither in magnitude nor in internal symmetry, but in its capacity to support future distinctions: to allow readers to reconstruct how concepts acquired authority, to compare incompatible genealogies, to contest classifications through identifiable evidence and to transform an immense textual accumulation into a precise, revisable and publicly negotiable field. The scaffold reads back because its organisation renders visible not only the structure of the corpus but also the assumptions, exclusions and trajectories through which inquiry itself has been constructed.

An idea does not enter the world as a finished object but passes through a sequence of transformations in which possibility acquires form, form acquires consequence, and consequence eventually leaves behind the conditions of another beginning.


To understand thought through latency, condensation, formulation, circulation, operation, materialisation, reproduction, fixation, residue and reactivation is therefore not to impose a rigid chronology upon intellectual life, but to recognise that concepts possess changing states of agency. In latency, relations accumulate before they can be named; in condensation, dispersed pressures become sufficiently dense to suggest a common problem; in formulation, that pressure is given a provisional linguistic boundary. Yet naming is already an intervention, because every formulation selects, excludes and stabilises. Once circulated, a concept encounters institutions, media, disciplines and publics that do not merely transmit it but alter its scale, emphasis and legitimacy. It becomes operational when it begins to organise perception, distribute attention or guide decisions; it materialises when those effects enter documents, buildings, classifications, interfaces, laws or routines. At this point, thought is no longer external to the world it describes. It has become part of its infrastructure. Reproduction extends that infrastructure through repetition, teaching, citation and standardisation, but the same processes that allow an idea to persist also make it resistant to revision. Fixation occurs when provisional distinctions are mistaken for necessary ones, when accumulated dependence turns an argument into an unquestioned support, or when institutional continuity conceals the historical labour through which a concept acquired authority. Critique often begins here, but critique alone does not dissolve a fixed form: concepts survive their declared endings as residues embedded in vocabulary, procedures, spatial arrangements and habits of recognition. Residue is therefore not the inert remainder of a superseded idea. It is stored capacity, unevenly distributed and only partially visible, capable of being reactivated when another situation discloses relations that the previous order could no longer perceive. The cycle consequently has no sovereign origin and no final closure. Latency contains residues of earlier worlds, while every apparently new formulation carries inherited structures within it. Originality lies less in producing something without precedent than in altering the relations through which existing materials can act. This shifts intellectual responsibility away from the romance of invention and toward the architecture of passage: how an idea is stabilised without being sealed, circulated without being emptied, operationalised without becoming command, and preserved without being immobilised. The political life of thought resides precisely in these transitions, because power is exercised not only through what concepts mean but through the thresholds that determine when they become visible, credible, executable and durable. A concept remains alive, then, not because it avoids form, but because its forms retain the possibility of reopening—because what has hardened can still disclose its construction, what has become residual can still recover force, and what appears to conclude may already be preparing the ground from which another state of thought will emerge.

The creation of cultural places need not begin with another monumental building. Many of the most useful infrastructures now emerge at intermediate scales: a converted room shared by several practices, a workshop with a public archive, a garden used for teaching, a domestic collection made accessible by appointment, a temporary cinema, a small laboratory capable of publishing its research, or an online repository periodically activated through physical meetings. These arrangements should not be romanticised. Smallness can conceal unpaid labour, fragile tenure and the withdrawal of public funding just as easily as it can enable autonomy. Their significance lies in their capacity to join activities that large institutions frequently separate: production, storage, exhibition, conversation, teaching, repair and publication. Marttila and Botero’s account of infrastructuring for cultural commons is important because it treats access not as the final delivery of digitised objects but as an ongoing collaborative process built upon installed systems, gateways, rights and emerging practices. SensibleOpening appears where a sufficiently defined place gathers attention while remaining alterable by the uses that enter it. The cultural institution of the future may therefore be less a finished container than a durable support for variable occupations. Its architecture should provide continuity without fixing one programme, technical access without aesthetic neutrality, and enough material care that flexibility does not become permanent improvisation. Digital infrastructures extend these places rather than replacing them. A small physical site can maintain a large public record, connect with distant collaborators and make its work available after an event has ended; conversely, an extensive online archive periodically needs rooms, bodies, objects and shared time to prevent public access from becoming only remote consumption. The central problem is not whether culture should be physical or digital, permanent or temporary, central or peripheral. It is how relations can accumulate without requiring every activity to become spectacle. Large museums and universities remain important, but they cannot contain every experimental, local or transdisciplinary practice, nor should cultural legitimacy depend entirely upon admission to them. New places can operate as connective tissue: spaces where unfinished work is discussable, archives remain close to their producers, and different forms of knowledge meet without first becoming departments. Their success should be measured less by visitor volume than by continuity, return, collaboration and the capacity to preserve what they generate. The ideal cultural place is modest enough to change, structured enough to endure and open enough for its public to alter the conditions of its use.

Where policies and resources are absent, responsibility is displaced onto individual journalists. The bridge to development studies is therefore decisive: AI competence depends upon institutional resilience, public-interest standards and access to infrastructures capable of sustaining independent knowledge production.

Marttila and Botero recast digital cultural heritage as a field of collective infrastructuring rather than a stock of digitised objects. Through the cases of Fusion and EUscreen, they mobilise the concepts of installed base and gateway to show how new systems emerge inside existing technologies, institutional habits, rights regimes and user practices. A gateway may be an interface, standard, organisation or social convention that allows heterogeneous worlds to connect without becoming identical. The methodological contribution is reflexive co-design, attentive to infrastructural becoming rather than the delivery of a finished platform. The work bridges participatory design, infrastructure studies and commons theory by locating politics in the slow alignment of actors and practices. Cultural heritage becomes public not when it is merely visible online, but when people can meaningfully reorganise, reinterpret and sustain it through negotiated technical and institutional conditions.

Rescue Is a Critical Operation



Rescue is not the same as preservation. Preservation attempts to keep an object, text or idea intact; rescue identifies a capacity that remains active inside material that has become marginal, obsolete or unreadable and returns it to circulation under altered conditions. The rescued element does not come back unchanged. Its displacement is part of its new meaning. Benjamin understood that discarded commodities, abandoned passages and forgotten fragments could disclose modernity more sharply than official monuments because obsolescence loosens objects from intended function and exposes the relations sedimented within them. The same principle applies to concepts. Habraken’s support and infill acquire renewed force in digital archives and distributed knowledge systems. Illich’s learning webs become legible within contemporary open infrastructures. Bowker and Star’s classifications gain urgency as automated systems expand administrative sorting. Rescue cannot merely declare an old idea relevant; it must show what has changed, why the neglected operation now matters and how its return alters both the present field and the rescued material. This guards against nostalgia. Archives contain more than any present can activate, so rescue must remain selective. What deserves return is what can illuminate a blind spot, correct a false novelty or provide a structure not yet exhausted. A responsible rescue carries provenance into reuse. What returns is neither relic nor replica but a transformed instrument, made available again because the present has finally acquired a problem capable of receiving it.

Systemic Lock and the Durability of Knowledge Infrastructures

StratumAuthoring names a transition rather than a static property: something changes in the relation between language, material, institution and use.
